On August 5, 2010 a copper-gold mine in northern Chile collapsed, leaving 33 miners trapped 2,300 feet below the earth's surface, more than three miles from the entrance – and only exit – of the mine. Sixty-nine days later and with the whole world watching, every single miner was brought to the surface, one at a time, alive and thrilled to be rescued.
This is the inspiration for 33 Lives, a slot game from Leander. The title refers to a note that was discovered while some initial boreholes were drilled to assess rescue possibilities: "Estamos bien en el refugio, los 33" ("We are well in the shelter, the 33 [of us]").
The slot's symbols reflect the rescue operation with relevant symbols, like that famous note, a doctor, a reporter, a miner's wife, a rescue worker, and a miner. These are in addition to the traditional slot symbols of high card numbers and letters, in this case 9, 10, J, Q, K and A. And there's a bonus symbol as well as a wild card (the note) and free spin symbols.
As for the bonus features, they are activated when you get three free spin symbols in the middle three reels. This triggers a kind of puzzle in which you need to put together different pieces of the miner's "33" note by getting wilds in the middle three reels – giving you a 33x win.
The field of play features 5 reels with 3 rows each, with – wait for it – 33 pay lines. The dashboard is bright, clear and color coded, so even newcomers to the world of slot gaming can understand what to do. You can play for fun or for real money, and you can play online.
